My main issue with the mc-101 is the non-editing of sounds. If Roland implements a song mode in the 707 I would certainly be tempted to get one. And it is certainly fun to use and feels a lot more 'finished' than the newer electribes (and has more features than the novation circuit). However, I wanted a small battery powered device, not a desktop machine, so i went for 101. So the 707 offers quite a bit more than just a 'double 101'. So is the screen and the ability to record phrases and sample. The possibility to actually edit voices is a big plus. My question is, does it make you want a 707 or are you happy with the 101 ? It is not a super cheap thing, so at this price one can expect a bit functionality, and the MC-101 has quite some potential as a modern day small multitimbral rompler box (and I don't think it would cut into the sales of the bigger units, after all editing via an external editor is not that attractive).īut my question now is: what is it with midi and this box? Should it work and it is just me that is the problem? Roland should really open up sound editing, at least via an external editor (like some of their older 'grooveboxes'). I also bought it as a multi-timbral sound source (small and battery powered is a plus). Channel is correct, but I do not seem to get any response, neither in note mode (using the 'keyboard'), not when there is a sequence programmed. One thing I cannot figure out, maybe someone can provide a hint: I do not seem to be able to make it send midi data at the midi out (5 pin, not usb). I could not resist to pick up a MC-101 (although, of course, I do not 'need' it). It's kind of like those old yamaha QY70/100s, only better in my opinion. Also has a ton of "bread and butter" sounds if you need those.

Ton of fun, pretty intuitive and easy workflow (other than the weird looper feature), seems kind of like having a slimmed down ableton in a tiny, portable hardware package. You CAN edit the sample's start/end time and reverse it when it is loaded into a looper track, but the looper function seems kind of weird and I haven't spent enough time with it to really figure it out.īut, all in all, this thing is a definite keeper for me. (although, sadly, the decay parameter does not seem to have any effect), but you can't change the start or end point or reverse the sample. If you load them into a regular tone track, you can apply a number of parameters such as attack, release, filter, etc. Regarding editing samples, as far as I can tell, you can only "edit" the samples when they are loaded into a looper track. Had I been limited to 200 or 210 samples, I probably would have returned the unit, but now I have access to a huge sample library and it's a ton of fun.Ģ.

I don't know if you need to limit the number of samples per sub-folder, as I have not tried, but the update that allowed for the folder structure not only makes it much easier to organize your samples, but also seems to greatly increase the number of total samples you can access. I have loaded a ton of them, and I can access them all. With the update, you can definitely now access much more than 200 or whatever samples. So I ended up buying one, and figured out the answers to my questions. Basically, in my Digitakt or Electribe Sampler (or even in a volca sample), you just load in the sample and can easily edit the start and end points or reverse it just trying to confirm that this can be done in the 101. When you load a sample, does the unit allow you to change the start and end time, or reverse the sample? According to the reference manual, there seems to be some kind of this functionality when you load a sample as part of a "Looper" track, but I don't know if it's limited to that. I am wondering if this allows the unit to recognize more than the 200/210 samples if you store them in separate folders?Ģ. All of the sample files were stored in a single folder called "SAMPLES." But in a recent update, they added the ability to add folder structures. When released, it appeared to only recognize 200 (or maybe it was 210?) sample files from the SD card, even if the total length of the combined samples was less than the total X minutes Roland said would be permitted.

I'm considering a Roland MC-101, but have a couple of questions:ġ.
